Week 7 June 6th – June 8th, 2017

Alstede Farms Highlands Harvest Club CSA

All of our CSA gardeners will continue to plant this week! Lovage will be in the shares. Lovage is a plant that has taken a long time to connect with American cooks but for those who have discovered lovage it lives up to its name and it is loved! It is a perennial. It can live in a large pot however unless it is a very mild winter it will not come back next year. I suggest planting Lovage in your garden where it will get plenty of sun all day. I was surprised to see it grow to five feet and I have heard that it can grow to seven feet tall, so plan accordingly. What can you do with it? The flavor is a cross between celery and parsley however it can be stronger than both, so use a little at a time. The tender stems can be cut into salads, chop the leaves into stuffing for fish or chicken, chop the tender leaves and add them to mashed potatoes or scrambled eggs or even a frittata. It is a popular addition to potato soup recipes. Pinch off the leaves and stems often to encourage new tender plant growth. Lovage will need to be watered often. The plant will develop yellow flowers. We will save the seeds in the fall and let them dry. They can be used in any recipe that uses celery seed.

It seems that this month is going to be more about strawberries than anything else. It is the season, it is the first fruit that we celebrate every year and of course it is the first fruit in our shares every year. I know that I have said this before, we are so blessed to be one of the very few harvest clubs that grows and includes as much fruit as we do in the weekly shares. This morning,
Sunday the 4th, was the first pancake breakfast of 2017. Strawberries were on the menu and many participants did go out to pick fruit after dining. It was so nice to see some of you, our CSA family! If you haven’t already, mark your calendars for our Father’s Day Brunch and then the Very Berry Breakfast, July 2nd. And of course, our CSA breakfast will be in July as well. So much to look forward to!

Thank you so much for helping each other and sharing all of your great ideas on Facebook. It is really fun to be in touch all the time. If you have not joined us on Facebook yet, you can always
send your ideas and recipes to me I look forward to hearing from you! Until next week, enjoy the freshness!
