Week 6 May 30th – June 1st, 2017

Alstede Farms Highlands Harvest Club CSA

I love having my kitchen garden growing just outside the door. It identifies me, you can tell before you enter that someone who loves to cook lives here and in your home as well. I hope all of you are feeling a sense of accomplishment when you can harvest a bit to flavor your favorite

Summer Savory will be one of the herbs this week. Summer savory is an annual plant however it has been known to re-seed in the garden or even pots and it can show up next year or even the year after. If your pot with rosemary and thyme is large enough add the plant there. If not start a new one or plant the summer savory on its own in a pot that is at least 6” around and deep

We will also receive Catnip. This herb will be attractive to the feline members of your family.

I prefer to plant Catnip on its own, in a pot or patch. I often come across pictures of cats relaxing on this plant. Catnip is perennial and it is a member of the mint family. The plant will spread however it is not known for being invasive. If you don’t have a cat you may prefer to add some to a smoothie or prepare tea that may help to calm and relax you. You may even want to put a few sprigs in your pillow case if you suffer from insomnia.

There will be a couple of “firsts” in the shares this week. This week our lettuce will be home grown from here at the farm from our organic fields! It will look great and taste even better!
Strawberries are coming along slowly. We have had some gorgeous days but we have also have had some cool weather and cool nights, not to mention rain. We all know that once it warms up a little we will have more than enough. If you don’t eat all of them on the way home be sure to remove them from the container, DO NOT WASH! Line a flat plastic or glass container
with a paper towel. Place a single layer of fresh strawberries into the container. Cover with paper towel and seal with the lid or plastic wrap. Strawberries will last up to 4 days or longer depending on your refrigerator. ash them right before you eat them, this will help preserve their freshness!

As always I look forward to hearing from you. Send your recipes, ideas and comments to Until next week, enjoy the freshness!
