Week 15 August 1 – August 3, 2017

Week 15 August 1 – August 3, 2017

This will be our first “August” share. I am sure you agree with me when I say “where is the time going?” With the end of July, Farmer Sam and I said an emotional good-bye to our farm campers. Before leaving they had a sneak peek at this week’s share out in the fields. We were first to pick some eggplant and peppers.

We picked cucumbers, and they pulled some onions. We picked blueberries on Friday and I could see that the season is starting to wind down while the peaches are more than plentiful! We have two Peach Pancake breakfasts planned for the next two weekends. I hope you can join us for one of them.

We took a look in the greenhouses and found some garlic drying so each camper left with one head of garlic. We knew that the garlic was on the way after the scapes arrived a few weeks ago. It is always a great day when they harvest garlic. It is one of the favorites around here. Somehow we can never get enough of it. I would say that the aromatic vegetables in our shares this week will provide great flavor to any and all recipes we will be preparing. I for one never stick with just one or two cloves of garlic in any recipe. I always need a little more. I really want the flavor of the garlic to stand out. The garlic was only harvested a little over a week ago. It is really still so fresh and not completely dry as you would find it in the supermarket. The fresher the garlic, the better it is for you. More antioxidants are available to you, helping to maintain good heart health and good circulation. Continued use of garlic can help us to enhance the immunity we need to fight disease.

We have now had our second Fresh Discovery Class. It was Wednesday of last week and we prepared berries and peaches in a couple of recipes and sampled others. The next class is scheduled for August 30th. It will be about flowers, some edible, some artistic. There are so many of you who pick up your shares here at the market. You, I believe are local and can join our club and our activities. We would love to see you there so please mark your calendars.

At breakfast last week I found a recipe for Zucchini Rollanti from CSA member Colleen Pederson and this week I had a letter from Tamar Bacon with a recipe for Summer Squash Soup. You may notice that we do not have squash in the shares this week. We are between plantings so we have a break and I will include these recipes as soon as we have it again.

It is always so nice to hear from all of you. Please send any ideas and recipes to and until next week, enjoy the freshness!
