The Naked Botanical sells farm grown herbal teas (bagged and loose leaf), herbal salt blends, salves, elderberry tonics, flower essences, tinctures and hydrosols in Mendham, New Jersey on a USDA certified organic farm.
Anna Hackman, owner and operator of The Naked Botanical, has been a gardener and farmer for about fifteen years and started her love of farming with four tomato plants! She became a full fledged farm in 2015 when she started The Naked Botanical.
She was smitten with gardening from the start and proclaims “she caught the gardening bug” and has since expanded her farm to include vegetables, fruit trees, fruit bushes, medicinal herbal perennials along with other bushes and trees. Anna has always loved growing herbs since she used them in her culinary dishes and she kept growing more and more different herbs until finally her husband asked what she was going to do with all the herbs. She replied without hesitation, “I will sell them.” Little did she know back then that simple declaration would result in a lot of hard work and a wide array of products!
One of the significant challenges that this small local business encounters is the difficulty to compete with the larger companies and other retailers due to her smaller margins and resources. Alstede Farms believes in supporting local businesses to ensure you know where your product is coming from and to keep money in the local economy which ultimately creates a stronger community. We chose to highlight Anna and her business in March in recognition of Women in Business Month.
During the late winter/early spring, Anna can be found growing new plants for the season in Mendham NJ. During May through November, she spends mornings harvesting the herbs, planting, weeding, and nurturing them. Anna will spend her days in Mendham, NJ, harvesting the herbs or processing them to be made into products or actually making products in a commercial kitchen. In season, Anna can be found attending local farmers markets, craft shows, or visiting local stores to sell and bring awareness to her products.
The Naked Botanical products are much fresher and of higher quality than their competitors. Most of their competitors source from overseas and the herbs are lackluster in color and smell, which consequently results in a low quality taste. The competitors herbs travel 1000’s of miles and may not have been processed or harvested to The Naked Botanical’s higher quality standards. The Naked Botanical’s dried herbs are green indicating it’s the freshest quality and are picked, processed and stored in airtight bags in cool spaces retaining their integrity. We believe in shopping and eating locally which helps lower your carbon footprint and helps live a sustainable life.

About Anna Hackman, The Naked Botanical founder and owner
Anna is a retired lawyer who traded in her briefcase for a hoe since she loved gardening so much. She tells us that she gets so much more satisfaction out of helping people as a herb farmer than she did as a lawyer. She touts with a smile, “But you can’t take the lawyer out of me since I am still very detail oriented and it shows on how I run my herb business”. Anna takes great pride in her company and with each customer’s radiating smile it provides her with a wonderful feeling.
