Culinary Expert Jenn“Food For Thought” by Jennifer Borealo

Last week, I was so excited to have apples, peaches, plums, and melon from the share to pack for quick snacks and as a part of lunch. I have been bringing them along with me to school all week. I was in the farm store on Wednesday and met CSA member Heather Eckel who said she may be doing a little baking with some of the fruit in the share. The cool weather has certainly given me the baking bug, I want the oven on and the wonderful aroma of the fruits and spices to fill my kitchen.

Apples will continue to be in the shares this week and for quite a few weeks to come. Last week I wrote about Gala apples, the apples that you received were a mix of Gala and Zestar. Gala apples are having a great season. We may have them in our shares more than once.

I don’t think that I can remember the tomatoes ever being better, they are so sweet and delicious. I have been making salads and roasting like many of you. I was excited about a recipe on Facebook posted by Vivienne Kay West. She was ready to place tomatoes, covered with chive pesto under the broiler. I am inspired once again by you. They are great as a side dish or placed on a grilled cheese or over fish or chicken. So many ideas from just one recipe. Basil is not as plentiful as we might like it to be so give this one a try, you just have to go out and snip from your garden. Due to weather this week the tomatoes may not be quite as plentiful. We will have plum tomatoes, a variety that we have not had before during this season.

Another reason to love the cooler weather are the leafy greens. It was so refreshing to see lettuce in the shares again. Try a salad recipe with apples or pears. The pear variety is Sweet Harrow. It is similar to the Bartlett and if left to ripen, they become a little sweeter and juicier and they may develop a slight blush. Pairing with bleu cheese and raspberry vinaigrette cannot be beat. If you are planning to bake with them just wait a day or two, they do not need to be fully ripe.

Kim De Maria posted a recipe that fills the 5 ingredient challenge and will work well with colored peppers from the share. A great recipe for a quick dinner! As you start to look forward to the true end of summer and the beginning of fall you may have a few minutes share your thoughts and ideas with jenn@alstedefarms.com, I as always, look forward to hearing from you. Until next week, enjoy the freshness.
