Mama JoJo Crayons is a local, small, woman owned business located in Hanover, New Jersey, offering handmade crayon sets that encourage all ages to get creative and let art be a part of their lives . Each crayon set is made with the highest quality crayons as their starting point then are crafted into fun and animated shapes that appeal to everyone.
Joelle Prisco (Mama JoJo) started to create these crayons as favors for her students when she was a teacher. Then, when 2020 and Covid hit, she began creating letter crayons to teach her (then 3 year old) daughter how to spell her name and learn the colors of the rainbow. It’s then that she took the leap of faith and created “Mama JoJo Crayons”.
Lots of thought and design goes into each color set from the color scheme, theme, sensory needs, scents, packaging, photographs for posts, and coloring sheets! Every part of the business is completed by Mama JoJo and she receives help with her deliveries from her husband and kids making it a true family business. Mama JoJo crayons mission to provide a quality, handmade product that makes both kids and adults happy and excited to use them!
Mama JoJo comes from a family that loves making things. Her mother is an art teacher and her father is a carpenter. Mama JoJo holds an elementary education and fine arts degree and has always loved art and creating inspired by her creative surroundings.
Mama JoJo soon realized that starting a small business is not easy at all and that it impacts her whole family. She dedicates a lot of time into her small business but realized “that when you do something that you LOVE, it’s what you’re MEANT TO DO, no matter how much work needs to be put into it! It’s that same “love” that DRIVES your business to keep it going!” As a mom of two children she is constantly learning how to balance her business with the changing needs of family life while learning the value of being flexible. Her advice for other entrepreneurs: “Establishing a routine is important, but things don’t always go as they are supposed to.” She quickly came to the understanding that some days she may work in the morning and afternoon creating my crayons while other days she works at night after her kids have gone to bed. “When I’m calm and flexible, that’s when my best work gets accomplished!”
Fun fact about Mama JoJo crayons – The nickname “JoJo” has been with Joelle since she was child. The name “Mama JoJo“ was developed after her nephew gifted her with a baseball cap for Mother’s Day that was embroidered with “Mama JoJo”.
