March 8th celebrates International Women’s Day around the globe and Alstede Farms recognizes the important achievements of women around the world and in our own backyard. Alstede Farms is fortunate enough to have several dynamic women in leadership positions along with being part of the succession plan for the farm. We are happy to highlight one of the women in business, our own Sarah J. Alstede.
Sarah Alstede is the second daughter of four children in the Alstede Family. Sarah’s love of the outdoors has been her inspiration and driving force to have a role in agriculture, specifically her family’s fruit and vegetable farm. Her immense love and respect for animals made it very easy for her to pursue agriculture to be a big part of her life. Sarah’s passion for animals stems from her younger years where she has always had an affinity for horses in particular. Being a part of her family farm helped her learn about the care and training of the farm’s livestock while being able to pursue her passion of competing in large scale horse competitions.
Ms. Alstede knows the business of farming from her longevity as she has worked on her family farm for as long as she can remember filling various roles from being the supervisor for children’s activities, to the team lead at farmers’ markets, to being in charge of animal care, as well as being the pick your own supervisor. All of these experiences have shaped her knowledge and wisdom which will serve her in business and industry in her future.
When asked what issues farmers face today she responded “ I think that the prices of quality fresh produce are going to affect the number of sales that local farmers are going to have. It is very easy to run to your local grocery store and buy an apple out of the cooler, but there is something special about supporting a local farmer that has fresh and very tasty produce.”
Ms. Alstede’s favorite memories include working with a wide variety of team members while learning the trade and recognizing their importance in the role of supporting the business along with creating a fun atmosphere and workplace.
Supporting Ms. Alstede with training, mentorship, and the ability to learn multiple roles has poised her to grow personally and professionally. Ms. Alstede attends workshops, seminars and networking opportunities which continue to cultivate her business acumen paving the way for the next generation of leaders.
We are proud of the next generation of women in business and recognize their contributions to making our world a better place.
